How to brew coffee at home

Find out about the best ways to brew coffee at home.

View Our Coffee

We currently live in a world where many of us work from home and have access to delicious coffee right at our fingertips - tempting! But knowing how to brew a coffee at home that gives you that great tasting experience is something that requires practice. Sit back and relax or perhaps follow along as we guide you through the many versatile ways to brew fantastic coffee in the comfort of your own home.

Equipment for brewing coffee

Owning the right coffee brewing gadgets isn’t a requirement as there are many techniques one can use to supplement standard equipment, although using these following items will increase the overall quality of your coffee to ensure your experience is smooth and flavourful.

Firstly, you’ll need a grinder. Freshly ground coffee beans help infuse the drink with the most flavorful tastes and whilst there are other ways to grind coffee at home, owning a coffee grinder is your best bet at a glorious steaming mug of caffeine-goodness.

Secondly, you’ll need a set of scales on hand to weigh your coffee beans to assist you with consistency and to tailor the strength suited to your preference.

Whilst regular kettles are more than suitable for brewing delicious coffee, a pouring kettle is recommended as it provides more control and covers the ground coffee more evenly.

When choosing filter papers, make sure you purchase the correct ones by checking the manufacturer recommendations as each coffee brewing method suits different filter papers.

And lastly, don’t forget your coffee! We know this sounds silly but there’s no point in combating the act of brewing the perfect coffee if you’re not experimenting with different flavours. Try our 100% Arabica espresso coffee beans with notes of citrus and a chocolatey touch, or perhaps opt for our Fairtrade espresso coffee beans, a beautiful blend of South Africa and America beans - and there’s plenty more where that came from!

Brewing coffee with a cafetiere

The most classic way to brew at-home coffee is with the cafetiere as it’s the easiest method to brew delicious coffee for yourself or for a group and no filters are needed!

  1. Boil the kettle and allow it to cool slightly.
  2. Add 18g of the coarsely ground coffee of your choice to the cafetiere.
  3. Add 330ml of your water to the cafetiere.
  4. Stir the coffee well and place the lid on to keep it warm.
  5. Wait for 3 and a half minutes, allowing the coffee to brew.
  6. After waiting, push the cafetiere filter down until you reach the grounds.
  7. Serve everyone in your house a glorious cup of your coffee to show it off!

Brewing coffee with a Chemex

Thanks to the unique filter, glass material and shape of the chemex, coffee created in these usually tastes better than coffee brewed in many other coffee making devices.

  1. First, boil the kettle and allow the water to cool slightly.
  2. Insert the filter paper into the chemex and pour a small amount of water over the paper to wet it as this removes the ‘papery’ taste - disregard this water afterwards.
  3. Grind the Cafe Du Monde coffee of your choice and add it to your filter paper. It is recommended that you add a minimum of 30g of coffee to make 500ml.
  4. Add water weighing double the amount of dry coffee - this is called ‘the bloom’, it allows the coffee to absorb the water and open up, ensuring you receive the coffee’s maximum enthused flavour.
  5. Wait 30 seconds and then continue adding water in a circular motion until you reach the required amount of water.
  6. Let your coffee extract through the filter. This should take roughly 6 minutes, depending on the size of your coffee batch.
  7. Once 6 minutes is up you can serve and enjoy!

Brewing coffee with a Moka pot

Using the Moka pot is an old-school method of brewing that essentially creates a thicker and stronger coffee than most as it pushes the water up through the coffee ground as it boils, extracting along the way - perfect for that early morning caffeine boost for the busy day ahead!

  1. Step away from the kettle as it is not needed for this method. Fill the bottom of the Moka pot up to the valve with water.
  2. Add your favourite coffee blend to the filter basket and level it off. Add the filter to the base of the Moka pot and screw the top of the pot back on.
  3. Place your Moka pot directly on top of either a gas or electric hob and wait for the water to boil. Then you will want to lower the heat to a simmer, causing the water to rise through the coffee and up the spout, spilling the coffee into the top part of the Moka pot.
  4. Like you might hear in Grandma’s house, the pot will start to hiss and whistle meaning it is ready for you to enjoy immediately.

Brewing coffee with an Aeropress

Thanks to its easy and compact design, if you’re using an Aeropress then it is likely because you’re only brewing a coffee for one person or you’re possibly on the move.

  1. Boil the kettle and let it cool slightly.
  2. Insert the filter into the detachable plastic cap, pour some water through to wet the filter.
  3. Place the Aeropress so that the numbers are upside down on the scales and add your 18g of finely ground coffee.
  4. Add double the amount of water to dry coffee and wait 30 seconds to allow the coffee to ‘bloom’.
  5. Add the remaining water and fill to the 300ml mark and then wait for 1 minute and give it an enthusiastic stir. Reattach the cap and turn the Aeropress the right way up.
  6. Place the Aeropress over a cup and slowly apply downward pressure to it. Expect some resistance, if it pushes down too easily then your coffee is too coarse and if it’s too difficult then it is too fine.
  7. Once your coffee has been extracted, enjoy!
